One thing that has been making waves at an exponential rate over the past few months is ChatGPT.

There has been so much written about it in the newspapers and social media. For those who are yet unaware, ChatGPT is a chatbot that was launched by OpenAI in November last year, which revolutionized the technology industry with its versatility.

What is ChatGPT?

In simple words, ChatGPT is a language model – a computer program – that is designed to communicate like a human. It’s the next best tool after search engines. It knows what the humans are asking, can answer complex questions with probable and possible solutions, cross questions, suggestions and advice – all, just like a human.

This surprisingly human style of responding, using appropriate words and sentences, also gives it the ability to write paragraphs and pages of academic content including assignments, poetry, music, explanations etc.

Additionally, writing and debugging your code, using it as a Linux terminal, using it for translations, suggestions for decorations, themes and parties are just a few of the things that ChatGPT can help you with.

OpenAI, a San Francisco based company, had previously developed the popular DALL-E, an AI system that could generate realistic digital images and art from text descriptions and natural language. Their latest offering, ChatGPT, created a storm immediately after it was launched. It was accessed by over a million users within a week of its launch.

Welcome to the world of transformative, disruptive technology.

Over the past few years, innovative applications coupled with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence have thrown open possibilities in various areas like

  • Gaming
  • Speech synthesis robotics
  • Image generation
  • Machine translation etc.

It has been evident that AI’s capabilities have the potential to revolutionize the world.

Microsoft’s entry. How the journey began.

How Microsoft Journey Begins On Open Ai

As a company, Microsoft has always focused on delivering intelligent, cutting-edge solutions to enable digital transformation.

When it sensed the upsurge and possibilities in AI as a transformative technology, it jumped on the bandwagon.

The company believed that AI technology has the capability to change the course of mankind by providing solutions to some of the challenging problems faced by the world today.

Microsoft’s public cloud computing platform, Azure, was already offering services across networking, analytics and storage.

When OpenAI launched ChatGPT, Microsoft realized that it could leverage OpenAI’s offerings and transform Azure into a global AI supercomputer. This was also aligned with its vision of transforming the world through AI.

In July 2019, Microsoft announced a partnership with OpenAI with an intention of extending the capabilities of Microsoft Azure in large-scale AI systems by developing hardware and software platforms, and to work towards further breakthroughs in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

The company stated that the technologies developed by OpenAI would be made available to all its enterprise and consumer products. Both the companies agreed to work jointly towards building cutting edge AI supercomputing technologies. While OpenAI would port its services to run on Azure, Microsoft would become its preferred partner for commercializing the latest breakthroughs in AI technologies even in the future.

This partnership was termed as a ‘multiyear exclusive computing partnership’, with Microsoft investing $1 billion in OpenAI.

This was a mutually beneficial partnership because while Microsoft benefitted from artificial general intelligence developed on its supercomputing technologies, OpenAI had a strong brand backing its vision of developing safe and secure breakthroughs in AGI.

In May 2020, OpenAI introduced Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, GPT-3, a new generation AI language model. By September 2020, Microsoft had begun to directly integrate GPT-3 into its suite of products through an exclusive license.

In November 2021, Microsoft launched the Azure OpenAI service, thus making OpenAI’s machine learning models available on the Microsoft Azure platform.

In fact, Azure was positioned as the absolute cloud provider for all tools and technologies developed by OpenAI.

Sticking to its vision of making AI safe and secure, Microsoft planned safety monitoring and analysis filters to ensure responsible usage of the GPT-3.

Although Microsoft had already integrated GPT-3 into GitHub’s Co-Pilot tool, the availability of GPT-3 on the Azure platform offered additional security and scaling capacity.

For OpenAI, this meant scaling their product to a wider audience.

Openai Launch Chatgpt

In November 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT, an advanced adaptation of the GPT-3 large language model. And in January this year, Microsoft announced a multiyear, multibillion dollar investment in OpenAI.

There have been discussions around this deal and whispers in the marketplace for quite some time now, so it was no big surprise when the actual announcement was made.

What was surprising was that Microsoft made this announcement in the midst of a slew of cost-cutting measures, including layoffs.

The company justified that such strategic investments in transformative technologies were necessary to expedite breakthroughs in groundbreaking AI research.

OpenAI’s press release defined the deal as a ‘multiyear, multi-billion dollar investment from Microsoft’.

Microsoft’s official blog also used similar terms stating that they were extending their collaboration through a multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment.

However, industry sources estimate this amount to be around 10 billion dollars over multiple years. Experts speculate that 75% of OpenAI’s profits will flow to Microsoft, until it breaks even on its return on investment. Subsequently, Microsoft’s stake in OpenAI would stay at 49%.

This round of funding has pegged the value of OpenAI at $29 billion.

For OpenAI, this investment would be a shot in the arm in terms of funds and support towards its increased cost and research to develop powerful and safe AI.

According to Microsoft, this investment was directed towards adding more AI technologies into its suite of products.

With ChatGPT turning out to be a sensational breakthrough and Microsoft keen to be in the forefront of advancements in AI technology, it was only expected that the company would be happy to increase its investment in OpenAI.

This move is expected to consolidate Microsoft’s position as an industry leader in the field of AI.

The company can integrate ChatGPT into its MS Office applications as well as cloud computing services.

Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, had never really challenged Google.

But now, the company finally had a product in its suite that could turn out to be a potential challenger to Google’s search engine. DALL-E was already incorporated into its search engine, Bing, in 2022.

A double edged sword?

Chatgpt On Microsoft Edge

There have been concerns and a few murmurs around the possibility of misusing ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is trained on finite data so its responses might not be accurate every time. Moreover, ChatGPT has the potential to minimize the critical and creative thinking abilities (important 21st century skills) in the academic sector.

At the same time, the potential risk of causing harm through false information, writing malware, increased biases and cheating is another major area of concern.

The question is, can OpenAI look into the growing concerns around the misuse of ChatGPT and be willing to make the necessary modifications?

Will this tool enhance creativity and critical thinking or lead to a cognitive decline?

Is it time to rethink and reinvent jobs, technologies and processes?

Final thoughts

No doubt, it’s a golden age for generative AI technologies. And Microsoft already has a finger in this pie, challenging its competitors like Google, Amazon and the likes. Is it time to move ahead of search engines like Google and virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri? The possibilities are endless.
